Description

Bring lab-grade alloy identification straight to the weld with the Thermo Scientific Niton XL3t 980 GOLDD+. This configuration combines Thermo’s high-energy 50 kV x-ray tube with a large-area GOLDD+ SDD detector and a factory-installed small-spot collimator—giving you fast, precise chemistry on everything from tiny weld beads to heavy stainless and nickel alloys.

The small spot allows you to target areas ~3mm in size making it perfect for testing welds and small parts!

Niton XL3t 980 GOLDD+ Configuration

  • X-Ray Tube - 50 kV miniature x-ray tube for high-energy excitation on all alloys including those tricky Ni, Co, W-bearing alloys and more!
  • X-Ray Detector - Geometrically Optimized Large-area Drift Detector (GOLDD+) for high speed and excellent precision on light and heavy elements
  • Small-Spot Included - Motorized collimator that shrinks the beam from ~8 mm down to ~3 mm—perfect for narrow welds, small features, and mixed-metal joints
  • Integrated Camera - Built-in camera for visual alignment and saved images of every shot. This also makes it easier to line up your shot on the base material, the weld filler material, or the weld itself.
  • Standard Alloy Calibration (General Metals): Measures a broad suite of alloying and tramp elements including Sb, Sn, Pd, Ag, Au, Cd, Mo, Nb, Zr, Se, Bi, Pb, Ta, Hf, Re, W, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Fe, Mn, Cr, V, Ti, Ru, S, P, Si, Al, Mg (31 elements) for grade ID and chemistry control.

Built for Welds, Small Parts & Hard-to-Reach Spots

Most handheld XRF analyzers are limited by the size of their analysis window. The XL3t 980 GOLDD+ with small-spot collimation solves that by letting you:

  • Hit narrow weld beads without reading the surrounding base metal
  • Test heat-affected zones and overlay cladding separately
  • Analyze small fittings, valves, fasteners, and machined features
  • Work on crowded or awkward geometries where a full-size spot just won’t fit
  • Pair the small spot with the on-board camera and you get true point-and-shoot weld verification with documented images of exactly where you measured.

Performance & Software

  • Fast, repeatable results thanks to the high-power tube and GOLDD+ detector—ideal for busy scrap yards, fab shops, and QA labs
  • Chemistry Mode: Full elemental chemistry with a built-in library of 400+ alloy grades for instant grade ID and pass/fail checks
  • Signature Match & SuperChem Modes: Enhanced matching tools for borderline or unusual alloys (high-temp, superalloys, specialty stainless)
  • Data handling: Store thousands of readings with spectra; export via USB or Bluetooth to your PC, LIMS, or quality system
