Description
Alloy Geek Academy provides professional, application-driven XRF training delivered on-site for teams using the Thermo Scientific Niton XL2 Plus handheld XRF analyzer.
This instructor-led course is designed to help operators understand radiation safety, proper instrument operation, and real-world application use of handheld XRF technology. Training emphasizes practical knowledge that improves confidence, consistency, and data reliability in the field.
Course duration: approximately 60–90 minutes
Delivery format: In-person, on-site
Instructor: Alloy Geek Academy XRF specialist
Course Structure
This Alloy Geek Academy course is delivered in three integrated modules, allowing participants to understand not just how to use the instrument, but why specific practices matter.
Module 1 — Radiation Safety Fundamentals
This module introduces core radiation safety concepts specific to handheld XRF analyzers.
Covered topics include:
- Basic X-ray radiation principles
- Exposure pathways and risk awareness
- Safe operating practices for handheld XRF
- Beam control, positioning, and bystander safety
- Proper handling, storage, and transport considerations
- Operator responsibilities and general regulatory concepts
This module is suitable for both new and experienced operators and reinforces safe, compliant daily use.
Module 2 — Niton XL2 Plus User Operation
Hands-on instruction focused on practical instrument use.
- Instrument startup and system checks
- User interface navigation and settings overview
- Proper measurement technique and sample positioning
- Understanding result screens and elemental outputs
- Common operator errors and best-practice avoidance
- Routine care, cleaning, and storage guidance
Training is conducted using the customer’s instrument whenever possible.
Module 3 — Application-Specific XRF Training
This module adapts the training to your specific materials and workflows.
Examples include:
- Metal sorting and alloy identification
- PMI (Positive Material Identification) use cases
- Incoming material verification
- QA/QC spot checks
- Understanding handheld XRF limitations and when confirmatory methods are required
Application guidance reflects detector capability, calibration setup, and the materials most commonly analyzed by your team.
What This Training Changes
Before Alloy Geek Academy training, many teams own a Niton XL2 Plus but only use a fraction of its capability. Operators may be able to take measurements, yet still feel uncertain about radiation safety, result reliability, or whether the instrument is being used correctly for their application.
After completing Alloy Geek Academy’s on-site training, that uncertainty is replaced with confidence. Operators understand why safety practices matter, how to measure correctly, and how to interpret results realistically. Supervisors gain consistency across shifts, and management gains confidence that the XRF program is being used correctly and defensibly.
The analyzer becomes a trusted decision-making tool.
