Description

Multi-Mode Elemental Analysis for Metals, Mining, Soil, and Plastics

The Thermo Scientific™ Niton™ XL5e Handheld XRF Analyzer is a high-performance, multi-application XRF platform designed for fast, non-destructive elemental analysis across metals, light alloys, mining samples, soils, and plastics. Built around a 5W X-ray tube and high-resolution SDD with a graphene window, the XL5e delivers low detection limits, rapid results, and high sample throughput in both field and industrial environments.

This listing is intended for customers seeking a configured XL5e instrument, where the final analyzer setup is determined by the application modes required for their materials and workflow.

Analytical Performance & Hardware Overview

The Niton XL5e is engineered to return lab-quality results in a handheld format, combining optimized excitation conditions with advanced detection hardware.

Core analytical capabilities include:

  • Analytical range: Magnesium (Mg) through Uranium (U)
  • X-ray source: Ag anode tube, 6–50 kV, up to 500 µA (5 W max)
  • Detector: High-count-rate silicon drift detector (SDD) with 1 µm graphene window
  • Spot size: 8 mm collimation
  • Fast real-time results with dynamic tube voltage and current adjustment

Results are displayed live on the analyzer, enabling immediate decisions during sorting, verification, or screening operations.

Available Application Modes (Configured by Use Case)

The XL5e supports five primary calibration modes, allowing the instrument to be configured for one or multiple applications depending on customer requirements.

General Metals Mode

Designed for positive material identification (PMI) and alloy verification across a broad range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including:

  • Low Alloy Steels, Tool Steels, Alloy Steels, etc.
  • Stainless steels
  • Nickel-based alloys
  • Cobalt-based alloys
  • Titanium Alloys
  • Copper Alloys including brasss and bronzes
  • Aluminum Alloys

This mode is commonly used in manufacturing, fabrication, welding, QA/QC, and scrap metal operations.

With factory libraries based on SAE, AISI, ASTM, AA, DIN, and GB standards, users can also edit, clone, or create custom alloy libraries to match their operation.

Light Metal Quick Sort (LMQS) Mode

LMQS mode is optimized for rapid sorting of aluminum and magnesium alloys, focusing on light elements such as Mg and Si at low excitation voltages.

  • Fast identification of most aluminum alloy grades in 1–3 seconds
  • Efficient sorting of close aluminum alloys such as 1100 vs 6063 in seconds!

LMQS is particularly valuable for high-volume aluminum scrap yards, foundries, and recycling operations.

Mining Mode

Mining mode is designed for geochemical analysis and elemental screening of rocks, ores, and mineralized materials.

  • Exploration and grade control
  • Rapid field screening of drill core, rock chips, and grab samples
  • Identification of pathfinder and base-metal elements

The XL5e’s low detection limits and wide elemental range make it suitable for real-time decision-making during exploration and evaluation work.

Soil Mode

Soil mode supports environmental and site-assessment screening, enabling detection of regulated and heavy metals in soils.

  • Environmental site assessments
  • Soil contamination screening
  • Brownfield and remediation projects

This mode is frequently used by environmental consultants, industrial hygiene teams, and compliance professionals.

Plastics Mode

Plastics mode is optimized for elemental screening of polymers, including PVC and other engineered plastics.

Typical applications include:

  • Identification of additives and fillers
  • RoHS and hazardous substance screening
  • Material verification in manufacturing and recycling environments

This mode supports compliance testing and quality control for plastic materials. It does not identify the polymer you are measuring.

Instrument Design & Field Readiness

The Niton XL5e is designed for extended use in demanding environments:

  • Weight: ~2.8 lb (1.3 kg) with battery
  • IP54 rating: Dust and splash resistant
  • Integrated smart cooling fan for longer duty cycles and continuous operation
  • Ergonomic, compact geometry for confined spaces
  • Hot-swap batteries to minimize downtime

Additional features include an integrated micro camera for sample positioning, Wi-Fi and USB-C data transfer, and support for Thermo Scientific NitonConnect™ software.

Configuring the Right XL5e for Your Application

The Niton XL5e is not a one-size-fits-all analyzer. Final configuration depends on:

  • Which application modes are required
  • Material types and elemental targets
  • Throughput and operational environment

This page serves as a request-for-quote (RFQ) entry point. Alloy Geek works with customers to ensure the XL5e is configured with the appropriate modes and accessories for their specific use case.
