Professional XRF Gold Testing Without Buying an Analyzer
Need professional gold and precious metals testing without purchasing an XRF analyzer? Rent a Thermo Scientific Niton DXL and get fast, non-destructive precious metals analysis for your jewelry store, pawn shop, gold-buying business, refinery, or temporary testing project.
The Niton DXL is a benchtop XRF gold tester designed specifically for precious metals analysis. Place your jewelry, coin, scrap, or other precious metal sample inside the enclosed testing chamber and receive an elemental analysis in seconds—without scratching, filing, cutting, or damaging the item.
Whether you're processing a large jewelry collection, evaluating customer purchases, verifying inventory, or simply need professional XRF capability for a limited period, renting a Niton DXL gives you access to proven XRF technology without the cost of purchasing an analyzer.
Ideal For
- Jewelry stores
- Pawn shops
- Gold and precious metals buyers
- Coin and bullion dealers
- Precious metals refiners
- Estate and jewelry appraisers
- Scrap precious metals dealers
- Businesses temporarily needing XRF testing
Test Gold, Silver, Platinum & More
The Niton DXL uses X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to determine the elemental composition of precious metal samples. Because the test is non-destructive, valuable jewelry and other items can be analyzed without the filing, scratching, acid exposure, or material removal associated with many traditional testing methods.
Use the DXL to help:
- Verify gold purity and karat
- Analyze silver alloys
- Analyze platinum-group precious metals
- Evaluate jewelry before purchasing
- Check precious metals inventory
- Identify unexpected alloying elements
- Screen for potentially plated or suspect material
- Evaluate scrap and other precious metal items
- Support buying, sorting, and valuation decisions
Know what you're buying before you buy it!
When you're purchasing precious metals, uncertainty can be expensive.
The Niton DXL gives your business an additional layer of information before you make a purchasing decision. Instead of relying exclusively on hallmarks, visual inspection, or destructive testing methods, XRF provides an elemental analysis of the tested surface.
For jewelry stores, pawn shops, and precious metals buyers, that means having professional analytical capability directly at your business when you need it.
Why Rent a Niton DXL?
Purchasing a dedicated precious metals XRF analyzer can require a significant capital investment. If you only need an analyzer temporarily—or you're not ready to purchase one—renting can be a much more practical option.
A Niton DXL rental may be ideal when you're:
- Processing a large estate or jewelry collection
- Experiencing temporarily increased buying volume
- Evaluating precious metals inventory
- Attending an event or handling a short-term project
- Waiting for your existing analyzer to be repaired
- Adding temporary XRF capacity to your business
- Evaluating whether XRF makes sense for your operation
- Considering purchasing an analyzer and want experience using one first
Get the testing capability you need without committing to equipment you may not need year-round.
Why the Niton DXL?
Unlike a general-purpose handheld XRF analyzer, the Niton DXL was designed specifically around precious metals testing.
Its enclosed benchtop configuration makes it particularly well suited for jewelry stores, pawn shops, gold buyers, and other businesses that perform testing at a counter or dedicated workstation.
Key advantages include:
- Non-destructive XRF analysis
- Fast precious metals testing
- Enclosed benchtop design
- Simple sample placement
- Designed for precious metals applications
- No acids or chemical reagents required for XRF testing
- No grinding, cutting, or sample preparation required for typical testing
- Suitable for repeated daily testing
Understanding XRF results
XRF measures the elemental composition of the surface being analyzed. This makes it an excellent tool for determining precious metal alloy composition, but it is important to understand what the instrument is measuring.
Plated, filled, coated, or otherwise layered materials can require additional evaluation because XRF primarily analyzes the surface and near-surface region of the sample.
For businesses purchasing valuable precious metals, XRF should be used alongside appropriate inspection procedures and your own purchasing practices.
If you're new to XRF testing, Alloy Geek can help you understand how to properly use the analyzer and interpret your results.

That's okay.
The Niton DXL is designed around a straightforward precious metals testing workflow, and Alloy Geek specializes in XRF equipment.

Rent before you buy
Considering purchasing an XRF gold tester but aren't sure whether it's worth the investment?
A rental is an excellent opportunity to put an analyzer into your actual workflow before making a larger equipment purchase.
Test your own jewelry. Let your employees use it. See how frequently your business relies on XRF results. Determine whether it improves your buying process.
If you decide you'd like to own an analyzer, Alloy Geek also offers pre-owned XRF equipment when available.
Important XRF Testing Limitations
XRF is a surface and near-surface elemental analysis technique. Results can be affected by plating, coatings, sample geometry, test location, and other factors. While XRF penetrates about 10x as thick as typical gold plating, it only reads ~10 microns into the sample surface. An XRF result should not automatically be interpreted as proof that an entire item has a uniform composition.
For high-value purchases or suspicious materials, multiple test locations and additional verification methods may be appropriate.
