Description
Multi-Application XRF Rental for RoHS, Lead Paint, Soil, Catalytic Converters & Alloy Identification
The SciAps X-550 Handheld XRF Analyzer is a versatile, multi-application X-ray fluorescence (XRF) instrument designed for environmental testing, hazardous substance screening, catalytic converter analysis, and industrial material identification.
Available for rental from Alloy Geek, this specially configured X-550 features a gold (Au) anode X-ray tube and five installed analytical applications, allowing customers to perform a wide range of testing tasks using a single portable analyzer.
Whether you're screening electronics for restricted substances, inspecting painted surfaces for lead, analyzing contaminated soil, evaluating automotive catalytic converters, or identifying metal alloys, the SciAps X-550 provides convenient, nondestructive elemental analysis in the field or laboratory.
Applications & Capabilities
1. RoHS Compliance & Hazardous Substance Screening
The SciAps X-550 is configured with a dedicated RoHS application designed for screening materials for restricted substances under the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive.
Common applications include:
- Screening electronic components and assemblies for restricted elements.
- Testing plastics, polymers, metals, glass, rubber, and other manufactured materials.
- Identifying lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), chromium (Cr), and bromine (Br).
- Evaluating incoming materials for manufacturing quality control.
- Supporting supplier verification and environmental compliance programs.
The analyzer includes automatic matrix identification for polymers, alloys, and nonhomogeneous materials, along with enhanced calibrations for different material types.
XRF provides elemental screening; additional testing may be necessary to establish compliance with restrictions on specific chemical compounds or oxidation states.
2. HUD Lead-Based Paint Inspection
Equipped with the SciAps HUD Lead Paint application, this analyzer supports lead-based paint inspections and industrial hygiene testing.
Common applications include:
- Residential and commercial lead paint inspections.
- Pre-renovation and demolition surveys.
- Lead paint screening on painted building components.
- Industrial hygiene investigations.
- Lead hazard assessment and remediation projects.
The analyzer includes a Performance Characteristic Sheet (PCS) testing application that automatically terminates measurements when the result is above or below the configured action level with 95% confidence.
It also features an OSHA/Industrial Hygiene application designed for sensitive lead detection, with a manufacturer-stated typical detection limit of approximately 0.01 mg/cm².
Testing can be configured for applicable lead action levels, including 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mg/cm², subject to the instrument's PCS and applicable regulatory requirements.
3. Soil & Environmental Testing
The installed Soil application enables elemental analysis of soil and other suitable environmental samples using Compton Normalization for improved trace-element performance.
Common applications include:
- Environmental site assessments.
- Soil contamination screening.
- Lead and heavy metal investigations.
- Industrial property evaluations.
- Remediation and cleanup projects.
- Screening for RCRA-related metals.
The soil calibration includes elements such as arsenic (As), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and silver (Ag), along with numerous additional elements.
This application is useful for rapid field screening, helping environmental professionals identify areas requiring further investigation or laboratory confirmation.
4. Catalytic Converter Precious Metal Analysis
The SciAps X-550 includes a dedicated catalytic converter application optimized for analyzing precious metals in automotive catalyst materials.
Common applications include:
- Automotive catalytic converter recycling.
- PGM recovery operations.
- Catalyst material evaluation.
- Scrap purchasing and material verification.
- Precious metal concentration analysis.
The dedicated calibration measures the three primary platinum-group metals found in automotive catalysts:
- Platinum (Pt)
- Palladium (Pd)
- Rhodium (Rh)
Additional elements are also included in the calibration to support catalyst material characterization.
For best analytical results, catalyst material should be appropriately prepared and homogenized before testing.
5. Fast Alloy Identification & Positive Material Identification (PMI)
The installed Fast Alloy application provides elemental chemistry analysis and alloy grade identification for industrial metal testing.
Common applications include:
- Scrap metal sorting and recycling.
- Incoming material verification.
- Alloy grade identification.
- Manufacturing quality control.
- General positive material identification (PMI).
- Metal inventory and material segregation.
The X-550 provides useful alloy identification capabilities across many common metal families, including stainless steels, nickel alloys, copper alloys, and other industrial metals.
Application note: This gold-anode X-550 is primarily configured for RoHS and environmental applications. Although it includes Fast Alloy identification, customers requiring high-speed PMI or advanced light-element analysis should contact Alloy Geek about alternative analyzer configurations better suited to those applications.
