Description
Mid-tier price. Large-area SDD. Five-beam analysis optimized for RoHS. The step up from entry-level that serious compliance programs actually need.
Is the X-200 Right for Your Work?
The X-200 is the right choice if:
- You need faster, more precise RoHS screening than an entry-level instrument provides
- You are running higher volumes of samples and need consistent throughput
- Your work includes both polymer and alloy matrices in the same screening program
- You want an internal automated calibration check rather than relying on an external standard
- You need GPS and cloud data management for traceability across multiple sites or inspectors
Consider the X-50 instead if:
- Your volume is lower and budget is the primary driver
- Your screening is primarily standard electronics and consumer products at typical RoHS thresholds
- You do not need five-beam analysis or the larger detector area
Consider the X-505 instead if:
- Maximum throughput and the lightest possible instrument are the priority
- You need the most advanced performance available in the SciAps line

What Sets the X-200 Apart for RoHS
20 mm² large-area SDD detector The X-200 uses a 20 mm² silicon drift detector - nearly three times the active area of the X-50's 7 mm² detector. Larger detector area means more X-rays captured per second, which translates directly to faster measurement times and lower detection limits. At 125,000 counts per second with greater than 90% live time, the X-200 moves through samples faster while maintaining accuracy.
Five-beam analysis for complete RoHS coverage The X-200 runs a five-beam analysis system for RoHS screening, using different excitation energies optimized for different element groups. This matters because no single beam energy is ideal for every restricted substance. Lead and mercury respond differently than cadmium, and chromium and chlorine for halogen-free screening require a separate low-energy beam. The X-200 handles all of them in a single measurement sequence without operator input.
6-position filter wheel A six-position primary beam filter wheel automatically selects the correct filter for each beam in the measurement sequence. This is the hardware backbone of the five-beam system - it optimizes signal-to-background ratio for each element group and is what allows the X-200 to deliver reliable detection limits across both polymer and alloy matrices.
Internal automated calibration check The X-200's internal shutter is made of 316 stainless steel, serving as a fully automated calibration and energy scale validation standard. This runs without operator involvement and does not require removing the instrument from service to verify calibration. The X-50 uses an external check standard that must be measured manually.
5W X-ray tube at 50 kV For RoHS applications the X-200 runs a 5-watt, 50 kV X-ray tube with Au anode - more power than the X-50 and optimized for the excitation energies needed across the full range of RoHS elements in plastics and metals.
4 mm native beam spot Like all SciAps X-series analyzers, the X-200 achieves a 4 mm beam spot through instrument geometry without a collimator. This preserves full X-ray intensity at the sample while still allowing more precise targeting than a standard 6 to 8 mm beam.
Configurable RoHS app on Android The X-200 runs the same SciAps RoHS app platform as the rest of the X-series. Automatic material identification, fully adjustable pass/fail thresholds, and the ability to add elements like antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), or nickel (Ni) as compliance requirements evolve - all without purchasing new software or a new instrument.
GPS and cloud data management The X-200 includes GPS capability and cloud data management options. For compliance programs spanning multiple facilities, suppliers, or inspection teams, this provides traceability that the X-50 does not offer.
What You Can Screen With It
Incoming inspection Screen connectors, cables, housings, fasteners, and metal parts at the point of receipt across a wide range of material types - plastics, metals, platings, and coatings - in a single instrument without reconfiguring between samples.
Electronics and circuit boards Verify lead-free solder and screen populated boards for restricted substances. The 4 mm native beam and fast measurement times make the X-200 practical for higher-volume board-level screening.
Consumer products and toys Screen painted surfaces, plastic parts, metal components, and apparel hardware for lead, cadmium, and restricted substances. Accepted for ASTM F963 toy safety screening, EU RoHS, WEEE, and CPSIA compliance programs.
Supplier audits At 3.1 lbs with battery, the X-200 is field-portable. GPS tagging of measurements and cloud export add audit traceability that entry-level instruments cannot provide.
Halogen-free programs The five-beam system includes a dedicated low-energy beam optimized for chromium and chlorine detection, making the X-200 particularly well suited for combined RoHS and halogen-free screening programs.
Mixed-matrix compliance programs If your screening program includes both polymer components and metal alloy parts - which is common in electronics manufacturing - the X-200's five-beam system handles both without separate calibrations or mode changes.
