Description

The entry point into the Niton line for RoHS compliance. 2W silver anode tube, next-generation SDD detector, hot-swap battery, five test stand options for flexible sample staging, and the point-and-shoot simplicity that has made Niton a trusted name in compliance screening programs worldwide.

Is the Niton XL2 Plus Right for Your Work?

The Niton XL2 Plus is the right choice if:

  • You need a reliable, proven instrument for standard RoHS screening of electronics, components, and consumer products
  • Your work involves both heavy and light element screening across polymer and alloy matrices
  • Point-and-shoot simplicity matters - your team includes operators of varying technical backgrounds who need consistent results without complex setup
  • You want flexible benchtop staging options using one of five available test stands
  • Hot-swap battery capability is important for continuous inspection jobs without downtime
  • Budget is a driver and you need a capable Niton instrument without moving to the XL5 Plus price point
  • 8mm XRF spot size is acceptable for your work

Consider the Niton XL5 Plus instead if:

  • You need small spot collimation for targeting individual solder joints or SMD components on densely populated circuit boards - the XL2 Plus uses a standard beam only and is not suited for precision component-level work of that kind
You need the fastest possible measurement times, the most advanced detector performance, or a lighter and more compact instrument for extended handheld use

What Makes the Niton XL2 Plus Work for RoHS

Next-Generation SDD Detector The XL2 Plus uses a next-generation silicon drift detector designed for fast, accurate elemental analysis across the full range of RoHS restricted substances. SDD technology provides meaningfully faster measurement times and lower detection limits than older Si-PIN detectors, making it well suited for RoHS screening including the demanding 100 ppm cadmium threshold.

2W Silver Anode Tube with Dynamic Current Adjustment The XL2 Plus runs a 2-watt silver anode X-ray tube operating from 6 to 45 kV with dynamically adjustable current. The dynamic current adjustment automatically optimizes sensitivity for each measurement without operator input, ensuring consistent results across the different material types and element groups encountered in a typical RoHS screening program.

Heavy and Light Element Coverage The XL2 Plus screens both heavy and light elements in RoHS and plastics modes. For standard RoHS work this means reliable detection of lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium, and bromine in polymer, alloy, and consumer product matrices. Light element coverage supports plastics characterization and halogen-free screening for chlorine and bromine in polymer components.

Point-and-Shoot Simplicity The Niton XL2 Plus is designed for straightforward operation. Any shift personnel can learn to perform RoHS screening in minutes. The touch-screen interface, customizable menus, and daylight-readable display keep the instrument accessible to operators of all technical levels. Pass/fail results are presented clearly without requiring interpretation of raw elemental data.

Configurable Pass/Fail Thresholds Pass/fail limits are fully configurable. Compliance teams can set thresholds tighter than regulatory minimums, add custom action levels for internal quality programs, and adjust limits as regulations evolve without returning the instrument to the factory. All results including pass/fail determinations, element concentrations, and XRF spectra are encrypted and saved in memory for traceability and archiving in compliance with 21 CFR Part 11.

Integrated Micro Camera The XL2 Plus includes an integrated micro camera for accurate positioning of the analysis area and documentation of the measurement location alongside elemental results. Images are stored with analysis data for traceability and audit records.

Hot-Swap Battery Li-ion battery with hot-swap capability keeps the instrument powered during battery replacement, supporting continuous inspection jobs without downtime.

IP54 Rated Sealed against moisture and dust with a certified IP54 rating. Built for real-world environments including manufacturing floors, warehouse receiving docks, and supplier audit locations.

Niton NDT PC Software The XL2 Plus connects via USB and Bluetooth to the Thermo Scientific Niton Data Transfer (NDT) PC software suite. Set operator permissions, generate custom reports, print certificates of analysis, and remotely monitor or operate the instrument from a PC.

Five Test Stand Options for Flexible Sample Staging Five test stand options are available for the Niton XL2 Plus through Alloy Geek. Using a test stand provides a stable, shielded, reproducible sample position for longer measurement sequences and repeated sampling - improving result consistency compared to handheld use alone and enabling benchtop-style operation in the field or on the floor:

Warranty and Service Coverage The Niton XL2 Plus is backed by Thermo Scientific's manufacturer warranty and a global network of factory-trained service centers. Confirm current warranty terms at time of order.

What You Can Screen With It Incoming Component and Material Inspection
Screen connectors, cables, housings, fasteners, and metal parts at the point of receipt. Point-and-shoot operation makes it practical for dock and receiving environments where operators may not have XRF experience.

Electronics and Circuit Board Screening Verify lead-free solder and screen assembled boards and components for restricted substances. The XL2 Plus uses a standard beam and does not support small spot collimation. For precise targeting of individual solder joints or SMD components on densely populated boards, the Niton XL5 Plus with small spot capability is the more appropriate choice.

Consumer Products and Toys Screen painted surfaces, plastic parts, metal components, and apparel hardware for lead, cadmium, and restricted substances across RoHS Plastics and Toy and Consumer Goods Plastics analytical modes.

Supplier Audits At approximately 3.0 lbs the XL2 Plus is practical for travel to supplier facilities. The Portable or Field Desktop Test Stand options can accompany the instrument for on-site benchtop staging when needed.

Halogen-Free Screening Screen for chlorine and bromine alongside standard RoHS elements for combined RoHS and halogen-free compliance programs covering thresholds of 900 ppm Cl, 900 ppm Br, and 1500 ppm total halogens.

Restricted Substances and Thresholds

Element What It Indicates RoHS Threshold
Lead (Pb) Solder, brass alloys, pigments 1000 ppm
Cadmium (Cd) Platings, pigments, stabilizers 100 ppm
Mercury (Hg) Switches, lighting components 1000 ppm
Chromium (Cr) Treated surfaces, total Cr only; Cr VI requires wet chemistry 1000 ppm
Bromine (Br) Proxy for PBB/PBDE flame retardants 1000 ppm
Chlorine (Cl) Halogen-free screening 900 ppm

Compliance Standards Supported

  • EU RoHS Directive (2011/65/EU)
  • China RoHS / ACPEIP
